Prodigal God

As a follow-up to the sermon, I wanted to give you some of the one-liners from the sermon and also highly recommend to you the book, "The Prodigal God" by Timothy Keller. I read it a few months ago and then re-read it last week in preparation for the message. It is everything I like in a book -- insightful, short, and easy-to-read. Even those of you who are not avid readers would not find this book hard to get through. You can purchase it here.

Below are some of the notes from today:

“One of the signs that you might not grasp the unique, radical nature of the Gospel is that you are certain that you do.” - Timothy Keller, The Prodigal God

The Gospel is not about making bad people good, the Gospel is about making dead people alive.

2 Ways people try to achieve happiness:

1. Self discovery

2. Moral Conformity

The sons represent two different ways to achieve fulfillment and two different ways to alienate ourselves from God.

Older brothers do all the right things for all the wrong reasons.

Older brothers do no understand grace.

Older brothers do not know they are lost.

We must get to the place where we repent not just for the wrong things we have done but for the right things we have done for the wrong reason.

To understand the older brother is to understand that we do not just need the saving grace of God on our worst days, we need the saving grace of God on our best days.
